Stencilled Floors

Did you ever click on a commenter's link and get taken to an entirely new blog universe where you don't know anyone?  That's just how I felt when I discovered the blog Lovely Etc. and found this post on these amazing stencilled floors that had 100 comments from people I've never met.

So, since I've been slacking off and have nothing to show you, why not go check out how Carrie ripped out her old carpet and transformed her subfloors into something really creative and beautiful on her Amazing Painted Floors post.  Please let her know I sent you by leaving 100 more comments.

I'd really like to try this on a finished floor so the wood shows through.  What do you think?

This seems like a pattern that would work well on a finished floor.  It doesn't cover a lot of the wood.  And what if you did it in stain or thin gel stain so the wood showed through.  It might look like this:

Go ahead and try it and let me know how it works out, okay?

  1. Ok - So I'm going to send you to "Content in a Cottage" blog by Rosemary. A few posts back, she shows some painted floors that are especially unique. They are both bathrooms, but I think worth looking at.

  2. You're so right - it's like parallel universes of blog worlds. Some bloggers are really good at being voyagers between these worlds. So glad you found this image and shared it. I painted our kitchen floors and now they need to be redone since we removed the staircase to the basement. Off to check it out. Makes me fondly remember Beam me up Scotty.

  3. These are really beautiful...I left her a comment...there's no way I would have the patience...but I do like the idea of wood showing through. I have seen that a few times and it was stunning.

  4. I was just over and left a comment. My daughter was just asking me to do this last week. We hate our builder grade wall to wall but there is so much square footage that it just ain't happening anytime soon. I would love to have all glossy black painted floors.

  5. This really is awesome. I wish I had the patience -- or at the very least a good long break from the pitter patter of little feet -- little feet that could not resist wet paint.

  6. This is AMAZING. I love it and now have to go check this out in the middle of my work day, I am so intrigued. Left to my own device, my entire first floor of wood floors would be stained in a diamond pattern, probably with a small black square at the tip of each diamond, you know what I mean? Heaven on earth to me.

And to all of your readers who came by to check out my design board giveaway and/or entered, a very BIG thank you! I hope one of you wins.

  7. Once I did a diamond pattern on a wood floor. I had them sanded and before the guy polyed the floors I laid out the pattern and then did it in a black paint, but rubbed it off after painting it on so it looked like a black stain. IT came out very nice. I love the stenciled floor you new friend did~hope you don't switch universes on us.

  8. While I am amazed by the floor you found, it's a bit over the top for me. Your pattern, on the other hand, would be lovely. I love it when the floor shows thru and is part of the design. They say it is easy to do, and with your talent should be a snap. Give it a try!

  9. I like your pattern. Don't think I'll be doing it any time soon, though.

  11. There are so many blogs out there that we've hardly tapped into the potential greatness. I love finding new blogs by checking out my commenters' whereabouts. I'm off to see the wizard, er your new pal.

p.s. You do a floor and show us!

  12. I'm gonna get on that right away! Honestly, with my lack of measuring skills, it would end up looking like a first grade project. It would, however be perfect on the shop floors, done by...a pro!

  13. I've only painted floors a solid color, I have dreams of doing a coastal border in our ocean cottage!

  14. I think it would work fabulous. Too bad I have no wood floors to give it a try!

  15. I've been blog travelling too. It's an immense world out there! That chevron floor is beyond the universe.

  16. What a coincidence, I had an email conversation with our mutual pal, Deb, just about this point ... that there must be millions of blogs out there that we never ever get to see or come across.

I might go for a good look too.

  18. LOVE the floors-can't wait to do our own!

We are in a holding pattern here because it's WINTER; we will be doing some stenciling on our wood-under-lino-x2 kitchen floor in the spring. Happily there is no asbestos to deal with :)

I am thinking a dark stain and whitewash combined will make me much happier than the icky 80s fake stone that someone thought was a good idea twenty or so years ago.

  19. Dahhling do it immediately! I am not brave enough to do so, but dream of if all the time!

  20. OK, I kinda freaked when I saw THAT paisley photo because I had pinned it on Pinterest after searching for a paisley stencil to do on my kitchen walls! Now I find it here too! Small world or maybe I mean HUGE big blog world.
So much to see and do and so little time! (Of course after going the stencil link I've found another that I want to do the bedroom in!)
so YES! do your floors! I like the idea of the stain with the wood showing through and I'd love to read those posts! LOL!

  21. Thank you for sharing this beautiful idea. I spent way too much time looking at stencil patterns after seeing it! Love anything paisley and would love to do one wall stenciling with the same color but just a bit of sheen.

I also love floors stenciled with stain. I have a single step from the dining room to the living room which was dangerous because people didn't expect it. I used stain and stenciled along the edge of the step to bring attention to it. highlighted a few areas of the design with rub-on gold "gilding" It worked and has drawn lots of compliments.

Can't wait to see if you decide to proceed--or if this might be a case of "too many ideas, too little time/space"

  22. Blog universe...how funny! Just when we think we start to matter, right? Well, you have given me some great inspiration here. I have a possible client with some wood flooring she's not so happy with. I'm so nervous about how it will hold up though. Thanks for the link!

  23. I have a sentimental fondness for painted floors. When we first moved into our house I sanded and painted the very worn wood~parquet floors in our entry and kitchen...then moved on to tear out all the ugly carpet on our stairs...spent hours pulling out all the tacks and sanding the plywood sub floor...then primed, painted and sealed them. It was to be a somewhat temporary fix but we ended up keeping it for several years! I was perfectly happy with the look until my son hinted that he was getting tired of it by commenting, "Mom, you do know these stairs aren't hard wood don't you???" I sensed a hint of sarcasm in his teenage voice and eventually covered them. That being said, to this day I have a fondness for painted floors. Thus, in a very long~winded way I'm saying I LOVE this post! ;) I especially appreciate your link to the Lovely Etc. floor and blog. You are always so generous with your finds.
    Warmly,

  24. That last image is unbelievable. After I saw your link to her, I went to see more of that painted floor. It is amazing. It totally inspired me. I've always wanted to try a diamond pattern in stain, and I decided Im going to do it in our upstairs hallway when we finally rip up the carpet. Yahoo! I think that pattern you chose is great. Get to that, will you?

  27. I did this once in a rental that had ugly uncovered ply floors painted battleship grey. I layered watered down teal paint on in glazes until it had a deep translucent effect. Then I hand painted big freehand paisley-esque swirls around the edge. It was very liberating and certainly looked great compared to what had been there previously. How lovely to still be that adventurous and time rich!

  28. Among these designs, I really find the paisley pattern so elegant. It brings a classy look to the floor. Stencilled floors are really wonderful because they create a whole new appearance of the floor. Thank you for your post.

  29. It is really great to know that there are several emerging ways to make our homes the way we want them to be. Stencilling is one fun and creative way of adding more life to our floors without much stress and effort. One does not even need professional assistance in doing this because it is really very easy. Thank you for this post.
