That New Construction Smell

The construction portion of the new guest bath is done.  It's my favorite part of a project.  The dust, the noise and the strangers in your house are replaced with the smell of joint compound, new wood and primer.

I'm really happy with how it turned out.

Now my works starts.  I have two new thresholds that need to be stained and finished to match the floors, wood casings need to be spackled and painted...

...walls need to be painted in the dining room...

...and in the kitchen.

I love the view down my mini enfilade but the path and the view is partially obstructed by the TV stand in the living room.  It's been a real challenge figuring out a solution for this but I think I've done it.

Stay tuned.

  1. Wall mount or recessed? What color is the library/dining room going tobe? It's so nice that the sightline from front to back makes the house appear larger and more spacious. What fixtures and finishes have you chosen for the bath?

  2. Look at you, keeping us on pins and needles! Knowing, you, you'll have all of the aforementioned items completed by tomorrow, including a new solution for the TV. Meanwhile, back at the ranch, I still have yet to paint the brick on my fireplace!

  6. It must be months between posts because there is always something "done" when I return.

Wait, you say it's only a matter of days??

Would you consider running for President or at least as Governor of Virginia?

  8. Wonderful progress. I don't know how you get it all done. Looks wonderful from here and you are right about that new construction smell. Looks like kitties are enjoying the enfilade - you will be able to keep an eye on them in other rooms now...

Cannot wait to see next steps...your house is looking really great! It must be an enormous treat to have a fresh new bathroom space...!

  15. This is so great! I can hardly wait till the next post. That said, are you planning to paint the various rooms the same color? If not, what fun it will be for you to choose colors that flow into each other when seen through the enfilade...as well as placement of objects such as the TV stand...

  17. New car smell has nothing on new construction smell. Ranks right up there with the smell of something baking or roasting in the oven on a cold day! Do you ever sleep?

  20. Ann,
Thank you for sharing; that place is AMAZING! There's another shot of that library from which the arches and staircase photo was taken that looks through two arched doorways into a room with a piano. Stunning! I love the color palette throughout as well.

I can't wait to get back there and look around some more. Thanks again! S.

  21. Ann,
I'm disappointed by the kitchen. It feels like it's from a different house. What do you think? S.

  22. Now and again someone creates something so beautiful that it is like that note produced by a bird singing on a wire, it's purity just makes you want to weep, the sound arrests all other considerations.

Pennoyer did that in that hallway. The color, texture and symmetry combine to make looking at that picture cerebral ecstasy. The first time I saw that picture I emailed Mr. Pennoyer saying, " That all the work and time he had spent becoming an architect, achieving that hallway was worth it." He emailed me back saying "Thanks".

To me none of the other pictures have the impact of the hallway.

The bird on the wire who sings that one note - forget the notes he doesn't sing. That is why I asked you to follow my directions on the website, I wanted you to hear that one note and be pleasurably amazed as I hoped you would be. Ann
