A Perfect Gray Floor

Just a quick note to let you know I haven't forgotten about you.
I've just been really, really busy.
I did get a few coats of paint on the bedroom floor and I'm really happy with
how it turned out. I used Allflor paint tinted to Benjamin Moore's Gray Owl.
I had wanted to use oil paint to get a really
high-gloss finish but I didn't want to deal with the smell, the mess
or the few days' drying time so I went with latex.
I have to admit, I love the duller finish.
It's like the patina is built in.
You may also notice a new chest. I've always wanted a
Gustavian piece and when I saw one at Darby Road,
I knew it was coming home with me.
I have to thank Google for this piece.
I've been saving up my Adsense checks to use for splurges
and this is my first one.  Since I've added this Gustavian piece you
might anticipate which direction the room is going in but I hope you're wrong.
I hope to shake it up a little bit by mixing in some modern and some industrial pieces.

  1. Hi Steve,
The floor looks gorgeous & I love the new chest. Can't wait to see the rest of the design emerge!
    All the best,

  2. Steve,
Love the gray floor! Samantha and I just put in a wood-look tile gray floor in most of our house.
We are loving it. I've covered the install in a few posts on my blog. I invite you to check it out!

    and here:

The planks have an old barn wood look to them....May I turn to your blog for some creative decorating ideas?
You have such a great blog!

  3. The floor is beautiful. And I would never presume to know what you will come up with. I just know it will surprise and inspire!

  4. I'd say that's TOTALLY the perfect gray. gray owl is one of my absolute favorites. looks divine.

do I need to be doing this adsense thing? I might need some advice from you on that...donna

  5. I love it - very serene. Can't wait to see how the room comes along.

  6. Love to watch your progress. The best . . .

  7. The floor and chest are gorgeous. I've been admiring some rooms you recently put on Pinterest. Look forward to the next installment.

  8. L O V E the floors.... gray owl is one of my favorites..

  9. I love where you're going so far! I can't wait to see how it all turns out! I hope you're enjoying your fall!

  10. Beautiful.
Someday I will actually paint my floors. I guess I will use Latex too, if it dries faster and it does look lovely!
I'm so happy that Adsense worked out well for you, I'm not surprised, so many people love your blog. I know that I always look forward to a new post.
I did Adsense for a few months...
    didn't even make $5.00! hahaha.
    ha. Hmmm...

  11. I love painted floors. I would love glossy black painted floors but I am not fooling anyone...ain't gonna happen here.
I am really excited to see an eclectic mix in there. I think the plant container was a nice choice.

  12. the floor looks great Steve! I have gray owl in my kitchen and love it!

  13. I wonder how it will hold up to traffic....

the floors in out living space totally need to be refinished but there's that $$$ thing again.

I do love your floor...could GG be persuaded?

You've been missed, you and your fabulous taste.

    xo Jan

  14. I think the patina is perfect, a gloss floor shows up every imperfection and as your floors look like they are in an older house, this is just the right look. I love the grey too...so much warmer and practical than the white a lot of people are wanting at the moment.

  15. Hi, man oh man does that look great. The chest is incredible. You becoming a regular there? :) Good thing it's just far enough out of my way. The gray floor is a stunner, and I'm dying to see this finished product. You'll be done just in time to keep us entertained with the holidays in your home!! Bet that's just what you wanted to hear...

  16. Oooooo aahhh! love The floor and love that chest!

  17. Oh...yes, love the floor and the chest.

  18. Ooh, the floor looks great! I love the chest too. You can't buy oil paint here in Canada anymore. Strange but true.

  19. I love that floor, It's a great idea. Is it hard enough?

  20. Very pretty! The floor turned out beautifully. Love the chest.

  21. You hit it out of the park with that floor!

  22. Oh the zen-ness! That is very Scandinavia look withe the gentle greys and painted foor. Your taste is, as always, impeccable.

  23. I would agree...a perfect gray floor. Beautiful! Love that chest and look forward to seeing what you decide pair it with in this room.

  24. Steve I love your image above and your floor is perfect with your stunning new/old dresser. I can't wait to see what you're going to do with your room as I like a mix of things too.

  25. Really glad you didn't use oil base glossy.

  26. I love the gray floor! Glad you didn't use oil...it's not very environmental friendly. :)

Let us know how it holds up. I'm thinking about painting the bedrooms upstairs but 1) is it worth the work and 2) how will the transition to the landing look? How does your transition look to the hallway?

  27. Your floor looks great, Steve — I'll have to tuck away the name "Allflor" for future reference. Now I'm hoping you'll give us a closer peek at that chest of drawers!

  28. Steve, the floor looks marvelous and, most important of all, you are pleased with the outcome. As ever, you have been generous with information and I really appreciate the tips for a painted floor project at our house has been receiving more serious discussion of late - a good sign.
    Happy autumn in the NE

  29. NNNNNNice!! Fabulous, Steve. Very Swedish.....so I guess I'm wrong. Since this is an urban cottage, adding modern / industrial would be awesome.

  30. Steve I know that whatever you do with the room will be wonderful working around those floors and gorgeous chest!

  31. The floor looks perfect. So does the chest. I love gray owl and recently used it on a client's walls. Now I'll have to google adsense.

  32. How many shades of grey did you look at until you chose this one?
    Sorry. I couldn't resist :)

    It's very pretty.
The matte finish will be a great foil for some slick modern touches.

Are you still going to use that abstract painting you showed us a while ago?

Can't wait to see the finished project!

  33. Beautiful chest and love the floor!

  34. I have been away a good bit also, you are not alone in the busy department! Floor looks fabulous and the chest is beyond perfection.

  35. Gorgeous color on the floor and I love the dresser. Can't wait to see what you do with it!!!

  36. Love the floor! Love the chest! I cannot wait for the big reveal. xo

  37. You know what I have figured out about you....that you are one patient dude! If you just leave the room with that cool floor and chest...then it is still a rocking room!

  38. Hi,
I've been contemplating gray floors and now I'm going to do it! But what is the best white to use on the walls? What did you do?

  39. I love white walls but not so white that they're cold looking. You could go with colors like Benjamin Moore Icicle, Simply White or if you want a little bit warmer white, the ready-mixed China White is really nice. Good luck!
