Autumn in the City

First, can I say that you guys rock!  Every now and then I like to put up to start a debate and it was interesting to hear everyone's viewpoint.  What I didn't expect was all the wonderful compliments that you all offered up.  It was a big hug from around the world and I thank you all very much.  You're all awesome!

Anyway, I've wanted to do a post about vignettes but I'm having writer's block.  It might need to be  broken down into two different posts because I have a lot of thoughts.  They're just hard thoughts to put into words and sound at all intelligent.  I'll keep trying.

In the meantime, I thought I would show you a little local color.  When you think of autumn, you probably imagine a rural landscape.  But we enjoy autumn color in the city too and it's sometimes equally beautiful in the urban landscape.

I hope you enjoy.

This is just around the corner from my office.  The City of Boston is encouraging bike riding and they've installed many of these self-serve bike rental sites around the city.  It's called the Hubway.

The foliage is even beautiful at night under the street lights.

A rainy day on Thursday brought many of my leaves down onto the sidewalk.  I'll rake these up and put lay a blanket on the garden as I put it sleep for the winter.

I hope you're enjoying a beautiful autumn.

  1. Thank you for posting these beautiful images. You are an excellent photographer. There is a subtlety to the colours in the city.

  2. I live in Chicago and I rather enjoy the seasons here with all the parks and landscaped streets. It's not just for the rural areas!!

I loved your last post, very fun!

    Have a great evening!

  3. I've never been to Boston but it kinda reminds me of Chicago.
Very pretty. Lovely neighborhoods within a city.

What I love about the block that I live on is all the trees. Beautiful in the Fall and Breathtaking in the Winter.
My city is small, surrounded by 2 rivers and 3 other cities and then the country. I wish I could ride my bike to work. It's under 10 miles but I would have to ride over a bridge and then up a slow steep monster hill. They would find me in someones front yard, dead of a heart-attack....

Thanks for a glimpse of Boston.

  4. I love the night time shot. I drive down Blue Hill Ave each morning, passed Franklin Park and the Zoo and the trees are so lovely. Writer's block? You?

  5. I love the smell of all those fall leaves. We don't get that here in California. I miss it from growing up in Upstate NY.

    ciao

  7. I thought I recognized the Post Office Sq. park and the Hotel Meridian! I used to work at 225 Franklin St., a.k.a. State Street Bank & Trust! I loved walking around that area, having lunch in the park and admiring the juxtaposition of the new and old buildings.

  8. Lovely photos. Autumn in the city is beautiful - I love family neighborhood streets lined with leaves - always so charming. We raked our front yard leaves today (again) and put them on the back garden for winter. :)

  10. Besides the images that you capture for us to enjoy, I take delight in your thoughtful narrative about the photos too.

  11. It's Sunday morning. Are you drinking coffee and psyching yourself up to rake?

Maybe not writers block as much as TMI to impart? And the need for a simple way to tell all?

A few hours of being physical will help you focus.

And your vignettes will arrange themselves beautifully in your mind.

    Enjoy your Sunday.

  13. Our leaves are all down now, but I loved looking out my windows into the golden canopy of towering sugar maples illuminated by the street lights in recent weeks (a glow very much like that in your second last photo).

  14. Oh so lovely. And oh so different than here. But the seaweed from the ocean was a lovely amber hue...does that count??

    no? oh.

  15. We have gorgeous Fall leaves in Munich too, but they are almost all gone now and the frost is setting in! The snow is just around the corner... My favorite picture was the one of the leaves at night! What a cool idea...

  17. Cambridge is beautiful in Autumn. I was in Cambridge on Thursday (of course it rained) and the trees were breathtaking.

I visited the Cambridge Antiques Mall after reading about it on your blog. So thanks for the suggestion!

  23. I work near PO Square too (on Broad St.) I had many nice lunches on that lawn this summer. I do love the leaves on the sidewalks and am so enjoying the warm weather today. Final day my apt. windows will be open I'm betting. Oh well, winter has its beauty too.

Boston is such a beauty. I adore the history of it too. And the Hubway line-up makes me so happy!

Hope you are feeling better. The soup you featured the other day looked amazing. I am a fan of a good Thai soup too. You feel better just watching it all go together!

  29. Looking out from my office window we hardly have any leaves left on the trees. I can't believe it. Feels like yesterday the trees were covered in beautiful yellows and orange.

    have a nice weekend!
