I didn't get to comment on your iron post, so here's my 2 cents...or 5.
To me, the more symmetrical the better and I love that you are widening the steps. I think it will give it a much grander presence. I agree too that the handrails need to be centered on the columns, otherwise, it does resemble a herding corral or handicapped entrance. I personally like the chunkier but less ornate handrails so they're noticeable but aren't the only things noticed. I have no doubt you will design the best looking handrails on this labour of love!
