Out of Office Reply

It seems like the world is on vacation.  Over the past three weeks
as I e-mail things to clients (this is in my real life, not the blog life).
I get the same thing:  Out of Office Reply.   While things have slowed
down a bit, I find myself unable to get any time off.  A website to build,
an office blog to launch, a new office space to find and an employee
to hire. It could be much worse, I could be one of the hundreds of
overqualified people out of work and looking for an entry-level position.

Yes, it's a blessing to be busy even in the summer.

In my little but of free time, I've been chipping away at the
outdoor painting...lots to do on the back porches.

While the front porch ceiling is sky blue, I've taken
a different approach to the back porch.

I've used semi-gloss Decorator's White (Ben Moore) so it's
an extension of the kitchen ceiling.  I love it.

I'm also trying to figure out what to do with the dining room.
Now that the table is in the kitchen--and it's working wonderfully--I
don't really have a use for this room.  For now, I centered a gate-leg
table I recently picked up...

..and I've set out a few things that I enjoy looking at.

This changes almost daily.

I've also moved a large painting from the front hallway to
the dining room.  It was almost impossible to see in hallway
and at least I get to enjoy it in here while I contemplate what
this room will become.  I'm strongly considering a keeping room...
a nice home office...or museum room.

So my apologies for not being around much.

I hope you've all got your out-of-office reply turned on
and are out enjoying summer!

  1. Ha! I thought YOU were out of office - what a great title. Sorry you're not! and I love your little gate leg. Mine is huge and thinking of scraping it. I need a blue table in my kitchen!

    1. I picked up the gate at this quirky little shop near Porter Square called "Fun Antiques" across from Pemberton Gardens.

  2. Looks to me like you already have a beautiful museum room. What a perfect wall for that painting, fits like a glove. The porch looks great as well. Always a joy to see a new post from you and see your new ideas...I'm the kind that finds a spot for something and there it stays forever, I inspired to try your way and change it up a bit. Always be grateful to have employment and remember to enjoy the weekends.

    1. You're right, it's kind of a museum room. The exhibits are constantly changing. Wonder if I could charge admission?

  3. I love the idea of making your dining room into an office. The office could also hold collections and be sort of like a museum room.

Out of touch is what summer is for, whether it's because of work or vacation. Lots going on here, and online time is more limited for now. Great to see that you're still kicking.

    1. You're right, Connie, any purpose could be double duty to a museum room.

  4. Yay! always happy to see a post from your blog.
Glad that you are busy, but still able to carve out a little bit of time.
    LOVE your porch!
    So you are hiring?
    I'm sure I'm unqualified but...
    I think I need a career change.
    and a change of location.
This town is spiraling down the drain.
I don't care what the publicity states.
They tear down old architecture to build AutoZone's and Drugstores.
    Sigh. OK enough complaining.

    LOVE the painting!
and I vote for a home office space.

When others are "out-of-office", I'm taking care of their pets.
But I will be able to turn on my "reply" after Labor Day
and school is back in session.

  5. I love the white porch ceiling. Ours was stained originally in a mahogany color and looked very beautiful but when we painted last year we decided to go with white and I am thrilled that we did. I'm sure whatever you decide to do with the dining room will be perfect, I love that painting and it looks beautiful in that space. I am also extremely jealous that you have hydrangeas, we cut ours down a bit last year because they were over six feet tall and even though they have filled out nicely there's not a bud in sight. Oh well, next year.

    1. The white feels very fresh and clean. I'm thinking of repainting the front porch too.

A lot of people are complaining about hydrangeas this year. I think it was a hard winter for them.

  6. Hope you get to take a vaca sometime this year?
Your house is perfection. And then some! Hope you have time to do an in-depth post soon :)

( I haven't even downloaded my pix onto my laptop yet, let alone update the blog, LOL )

We've had a three week fun-fest as hubby transitions from the OR job to his new one here in CA.
Last night we went to Ocean Beach to catch the sunset, and we got treated to a school of dolphins frolicking in the bay. Love living here in SoCal.

I vote office for your space-what a great place to work!

  10. Your home is so lovely. I want to figure out a better use for our dining room...which takes up a lot of real estate in this 1920's apartment. I need to make it more comfortable. AND I need a vacation, too...been keeping really busy. Guess that's a good thing as you say!

  12. Hi Steve, For some reason I am no longer getting email alerts about your posts, so I searched for you on Google and sure enough had missed several things. Should I sign up again? Boy do I love your former dining room by what ever you decide to call it!

    1. I'm sorry to hear that, Heather. I know what was happening a few years ago but I thought the problem was fixed. Perhaps signing up again will work; I'm not sure how that works.

  14. Steve, sorry to hear work is so busy but your point about gainful employment is apt. I love the white ceiling. It feels airy and the continuity of colour from the kitchen must give it an expansiveness. I love the old dining room as a museum room or library with an ever-changing vignette. And that painting is amazing. I love it.
Sorry I've not been around much either. Terrible headaches lately and sciatica so lots of physio and ice packs. We did get the wedding photos last night so I will post some of those soon.
Glad you're well albeit busy!!! Xo Terri

  17. Hi, Steve,

I'm enjoying the progress on your back porch, and am a little envious of the more private space you're creating. The high-gloss ceiling looks great!

  18. How about using the dining room as a library with some comfortable chairs...and art?

    1. That's a good possibility, Victoria. Library, den, keeping room, study...something like that. I'm thinking a love seat and chair, something like that. I'm scoping out possibilities.

    1. Thank you. The painting came from a Boston gallery over 15 years ago. It's by an artist named Ron Ehrlich from Rhode Island. It was a huge splurge back then but they're completely unaffordable now.

  20. Hello my friend! I'm so glad to hear about all these work happenings! I am seeing first hand the struggle of being our age and impossible to find work. It is heartbreaking to watch. Anyway, love what the dining room looks like, and the gate table is gorg. You know I adore your style. If it were me, I would use two comfy chairs, because I would want to sit in there and just stare, with my coffee, at all your wonderful objects. And the painting looks amazing there. Gasp.

  21. I love the dining room and that great painting. Whatever you decide to do with the room will be great.

I have had so much going on IN the office (or studio in my case) that I really only have the energy to scroll through blogs quickly without commenting. Writing my own blog posts sometimes seems like a Herculean task. Hopefully everyone will be back in the swing of things once summer winds down.

  23. I love white porch ceiling--it looks so crisp and inviting, and adore everything in your didning room. Whatever you do it will be wonderful. Beautiful pictures, all.

  24. As always, everything is beautiful. Is it possible to have a hybrid dining room/library-office? Years ago I fell head over heels in love with a dining room that housed the obligatory table/chairs but was surrounded by floor to ceiling shelves that housed both artwork and books. Not being familiar with your room dimensions, I do recall that this magazine spread room was not ginormous. Somewhere, somewhere, I have that photo; always hoping that in my dreamhouse this would become a reality. Whatever choice you make, your instincts have never failed you...

  25. Your home is stellar Steve. I love the porch, all your architectural details, your supreme good taste and a room you have no use for? a designer's dream! Love the large painting in there. Good luck with balancing all your plates in the air and hope you steal some time for yourself. xo Nancy

  26. As always, loved your post, and the pics. Dual-purpose is great, because I'm sure you still want ot be able to entertain. I'm so jealous of your porch. I wasn't able to have my porch re-done due to a payment to the IRS. So, I'm doing the best I can with it.

And like you, I'm grateful for my job, even though it's tiresome. I just think of all the people who would leap at the chance to trade places. Yes, the economy is still horrific, as is inflation.

  27. I'm happy you're busy with the business but hope you can find a bit of time for yourself. Porch looks great and I love the big painting in the dining room. Will be fun to see what you end up doing with it - although just having an open space to display things you enjoy is purposeful enough to me! : )

  28. Now this is EXCITING! A room for whatever - you certainly know how to have us dangling on a hook!
The painting looks great, with enough space to stand back and take a decent look.
Sometimes work is just work - but it pays the bills!

  29. Half of my clients are out of town....must remember for next year and plan my own vacation. Although I don't really like to go places in the summer cause it is WAY to crowded! Love the gate leg table with all of the treasures....I have many of those same things. Great minds.

  30. Hi Steve,

I have no idea why, but your Christmas, 2011, tree came to my mind today as it was sprinkling here in Southern California (as I was dreaming of winter). I told my kids it was going to be so nice for winter to get here, and my son was asking if we were going to try to do a blogger Steve tree for Christmas this year??? It just seemed a good time to let you know how excited I am getting to see your winter and holiday blog posts. Love all your renovations!

  31. I love the porch ceiling. I'm sure your neck is killing you. The key is to paint and not look up, or roll it with an extension in front of yourself, which kills your arms, but I can tell from your shadow photo you can handle it. Either way you deserve a cocktail.

  32. Hi Steve, the painting looks great. I really like your ceiling and especially the chandelier. Where did you get it from? I've recently searched for a similar design, found one on http://www.interior-deluxe.com/, but it was out of stock.. do you have other ideas?
By the way, the combination of the painting and the furniture is a perfect example of great taste.

    1. Thank you so much for the compliment! The dining chandelier is by Quoizel. It's one the first things I changed when I bought the house. It was unfortunately discontinued a few years ago but at least it gives you maker you can search for. You may be able to find one on ebay or something.

Hello Steve, just love all that you are doing & have done already to your beautiful home, it just oozes love. I know that I read somewhere in one of your older posts, but we are about to paint our house and was just wondering if you would mind sharing your paint colours with me as I absolutely love them right down to the front door!! you are truly inspirational and I can't wait to see what you are doing next!! I follow you all the way from a place called Golden Bay which is at the top of the south island in New Zealand.

Thank you for your kind comments! The house colors are all Benjamin Moore. The body of the house is Graystone, the trim is Silver Chain and the doors are just their ready-mixed black. Good luck with your house painting!
