More from the Tip of Cape Cod

So here we are again where we last left off.  Low tide on Provincetown Harbor.

The water is quite shallow in much of the harbor so when the tide goes out, the sun heats the water
and sometime by the end of the day, the water is incredibly warm when the tide starts coming back in.

Provincetown is filled with textures.  Weather worn clapboards, shingles and a sculpture
in front of the museum are well contrasted here.

You may remember this house from a post I did in all black and white about
a very gray day in Provincetown.  I have to say, it's unfortunate the hedge
doesn't allow a view or path to the front door.  I suspect it's a privacy hedge but even
a solid white gate would look better.  That's my critique for what it's worth.

I just happened to be lucky enough to be there on the day when this beautiful
Gothic Revival was getting a whitewash.  There's so many things I love about this photo.

I think it was Erin from Whaling City Cottage who pointed out on Instagram that the
trim looked like shark's teeth.  Isn't it great?  I love Tom's straw hat and and the crooked chimney.

And here's Huck, in a great action pose, having been convinced to use a wide brush.
No rollers, no sprayers.  Completely old school.

The town has unfortunately become overbuilt but it does make for some pretty nice compositions
of gray shingles and white trim...

...mixed with lots of cottage charm...

...pretty gardens with white picket fences with a view of the harbor from almost everywhere.

Roses seemed to be the flower of the week.

Although Provincetown has been a fishing village for centuries, it's main wharf
is now a mix of fishing and pleasure vehicles.

The beach at low tide.

Provincetown's main street, Commercial Street is lined with shops,
galleries and restaurants.

John Derian's little shop is a hidden gem.  It's a cute little shack packed with his signature
decoupaged wares and some great one-of-a-kind pillows, lights and other homes
accessories.  Look for it on Law Street right near the center of town.

And the famous Lobster Pot.  It's become an icon with all of it's fun vintage signage.
(Note:  Get the lobster-avocado cocktail!)

There's a show at the Provincetown Art Association and Museum (PAAM)
of woodblock prints that represent 100 years of print work in Provincetown.

IT IS AMAZING!
It's open through August 10th so if you can make it, it's worth the cost of admission.

This is a print by Edna Boies Hopkins whose work I love but I'll show you
another subset of prints in another post.

  1. One of my favorite times was whale watching off Provincetown and the lobsters? Big as cats. Couldn't believe them compared to the small little tails we get back in OK.

  3. My favorite place on earth - I've gone for the same week for 8 years now (the week BEFORE carnival) when weather is perfect and the town is low key in prep for carnival. Staying in a new house this year and curious how that will change it for me. I can't wait to see the carpenters Gothic this year -my favorite house in town and so jealous you got to see it painted! I wrote about it myself a few years ago here http://www.architectdesign.blogspot.com/2011/08/carpenters-gothic.html

  7. It's been a long time since we've ventured up to Provincetown. I remember cottages on the beach and big sand dunes that defines the color beige. I remember the center of town being very charming but don't recall any store in particular. I do remember a bar with some suspicious characters. Time to go back.

  11. That was so relaxing, I feel as if I were there. Though they must have been out of the lobster/avocado cocktail cause I'm still hungry.

    You paint such pretty pictures.

  12. She had to have been in California or Australia when she did that print. I've never seen a rendering of flowering eucalyptus and they don't grow here.

  14. I have been wanting to go back to Provincetown for years. I just bought a digital print of a Provincetown Shack and I really want to experience the place in person. Thinking of taking the boat from Boston. Have you ever done that?

  19. Looks wonderful. And I love your rose photo -- perfection! I need to visit Cape Cod some day with my husband (he would love it for the fishing alone). My parents honeymooned on Cape Cod, so it would have special meaning for me to visit there.

  22. Whenever I'm in Ptown (which is usually in the winter unfortunately) I always wish I could have seen what it looked like 60 years ago. A favorite stop of ours is the little bar at the Atlantic House. I love the beach nudes from the 1950's. One of them is Tennessee Williams I think.

  23. I've really missed your posts. Don't know why suddenly I've received one today but I'm thrilled to see you again. I lived in MA for all my life until 3 months ago. Always looking at your photographs makes me SEE what I love and missed while I was looking right at it. If you can figure out what I mean. I've been to P-town many many times. I've never really "seen" what I see in your pictures. I love your blog. Please don't stop, ever?
