Merry Christmas

Many of you noticed I won the Christmas tree contest on Scot Meacham Wood's blog.  There was a panel of judges whose work I really respect so taking home my second award was really quite an honor.  But I'm actually quite surprised I won because it wasn't the tree I planned on entering.
I just didn't have the time to get it done in time.

My initial thought was to have a tree centered under the Moravian star pendant
in the guest bedroom.  Since you weren't able to make it for Christmas this year,
I would clean out the guest bedroom and set the tree up in the center of the room.

The stars being a guide for sailors, I thought a tree decorated with marine signal flags
would be the perfect theme and I would want them all basically the same so they would look
like a sea of stars on the tree.

I would use hang tags to make the ornaments and trim them
into the basic marine flag shapes...

...and use silver glitter to give them a little bling.

The tags would also be perfect to write a few
prayers, dreams, wishes or messages to the universe.

I would add a little Love and Joy.

I've never had a tree centered in the room before; it would be a little unconventional.
But it would be a wonderful place to sit and enjoy the sea of stars.

May love and joy come to you.

Merry Christmas!

  1. Well, Steve, I'm sure that would be a very special tree. But I don't think it could beat out the one you showed us already. That was one amazingly beautiful tree, and the award is well deserved. Congratulations and Merry Christmas!

  2. Steve, Each year you out do yourself. Your awards are always well deserved. Both trees are wonderful. I am especially fond of the tree decorated with all the natural elements. I can't wait to see where you will place your new pillows. I hope you have the merriest of Christmases. Bonnie

  3. Very creative. And you've reminded me of the chorus of Here we come A-wassailing with your last line -

Love and joy come to you,
    And to you your wassail too;
And God bless you and send you a Happy New Year
And God send you a Happy New Year.

  6. well you know that I was stunned by the fabulousness of your other tree and now I'm loving the simplicity of this one.
But what really got to me was the "messages to the universe"...
    love that.

  9. Steve, your nautical tree also works because St. Nicholas, like St. Elmo, protected sailors. The evening shot of your living room tree is warm and beautiful!

I wish you a merry Christmas and a new year filled with all the best!

  16. Steve, this is to notify you that i am fostering your tree. Just seeing the pictures filled the space in my celebration that is missing my tree this year. Thanks so much.

    Merry Christmas!!

  17. Oh my! First, I should say that the modern chair under the handsome portrait is stunning. I love the idea behind the nautical/soulful theme. It reminds me of the nursery rhyme Wynken,Blynken, and Nod... Sailed on a river of crystal light
    Into a sea of dew.
"Where are you going, and what do you wish?"
The old moon asked the three.

Its seems as though your tree might hold all of the questions and perhaps answers.

  19. Oh I love that. I love marine flags but yours with their little notes are better. Somehow "I am carrying dangerous goods" or " I am on fire" does not make sense at Christmas.
Just came home from the most awkward Christmas party I have ever attended. Very wealthy but socially awkward people. I had my best conversation of the night with their autistic 13-year old son.
    :)

    Merry!!

  28. Well aren't you the crafty one. Martha Stewart needs to hire you. Congrats on winning the contest again, I love the tree. You better move it out of the guest room though because I'm coming down to deliver those cinnamon rolls in person.

    Have a great Christmas!

  40. A beautiful creative post! I came across your blog months ago, wrote down the blog name and then misplaced the piece of paper. I was doing a big clear out and then came across the piece of paper again. I love the gift tag tree and I might just 'borrow' this idea some time in the future!

  43. Oh, lovely, I'm a sucker for a tree with a message! I do hope that there was a label on it for me or for Maisie. I went to a Moravian school but didn't know that the star light was named as Moravian. The simplicity and thought behind your label tree is beautiful.
Congratulations on your award, oh Tree Decorating King.
