Peace on Earth?


The tree is decorated but it seemed wrong to post photos without acknowledging
the lives lost in Connecticut yesterday.  Such a horrific act is unimaginable to me.
I spent last evening and this morning hypnotized and numbed by the unending coverage. 

I can turn it off.

My thoughts, prayers and deepest sympathies are with the
1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26
families who can't turn it off.

  1. As a person who works in an elementary school with children the same age, it is unimaginable to me. God Bless them all.

  2. It 's heartbreaking when you actually count the numbers outloud. I can't wrap my head around any of it but I sure am praying.

I'm right there with you...what can be so wrong with someone that they can take the lives of 20 beautiful babies so ruthlessly and with such ease...something is so wrong in the world in which we are living...heartbreaking and sad...may something good come out of this if that is at all possible...in my heart and thoughts...what a waste

  4. Are your Paper Whites flowering? Mine are almost ready to pop . . . I like the pinecones here and there in our home too . . .

    We are making homemade ice cream . . . It is helping keep our mind off those suffering in grief . . . I can't fathom it all. So very sad . . .

    I can turn it off . . .

  6. I spent the day with my nieces today.
    I felt a great need to be with them.
    My mind won't allow me to think of a world without them in it.
    We talked about the senseless shooting, the evil that could take those young innocent lives.
    One of my nieces is going to college to be a teacher and she works at a preschool right now. She said that many parents arrived early to pick up their kids and hug them close.
    I can't imagine what the parents of the victims are going through. How can a person handle such a tragedy? My heart goes out to them. They have my prayers and deepest sympathies.

  7. Your words, or should I say numbers -- how powerful. I'm moved back to the brink of tears. I had the same sentiments when I posted today. It doesn't seem like a day for showing our best decorating, but rather, our best hearts.

  8. I feel the same. I just can't watch the coverage any longer. Its all too horrible.

    BTW...yes I'm back...sort of. Just been busy, but I've still been reading and keeping up. And, my paperwhite are about to bust into bloom. Just hoping they last until xmas guest arrive.

  10. I teach children this age and I cannot imagine the fear and chaos that went on in that school. There are no words just a deep and heavy sorrow for those families. I've tied 26 white bows on a tree in my front yard to honor those children and the staff who died.

  12. It's too horrific and completely unimaginable. I have only been checking details once or twice a day online. I just watched the father of one of the victims speak out -- truly heartbreaking. Tragedies like this put so much into perspective. My prayers are with everyone who was affected.

  13. Sadly, you are correct-they will never be able to turn it off.
    The grief of all those left behind needs to be seriously addressed-I hope they ALL get the help they will need in the coming days/weeks/months/years, including the first responders, those poor parents/grandparents/siblings, and even the shooter's dad and brother.

    It's time to change our laws about guns.
    Mental illness issues need to be talked about as well.

    All I can think of is, "If not now, when? If not us, who?"

  14. As a teacher this is my greatest fear. This unimaginable tragedy rocked me to the core. Monday I know our children and students will have many questions, and we must reassure them that they are In a safe environment. Hug your loved ones, especially the children!

  17. As mom to a little girl the same age, in the same grade.... this hits home for me. I continue to pray for the parents, siblings, and everyone affected by the tragedy on Friday. May God heal their hearts, and mend their spirits.
    Like so many other parents, I sure have been giving my babies more hugs than normal.

  21. i stand with you steve, this is both gut wrenching and frustrating. we all watch, in a trance with horror and the feeling of powerlessness as we watch our country spiral down and the NRA stand defiant.

  22. I wrote about this today. I have a friend who lost someone in the Clackamas OR shooting. Two of my former students have a close friend whose 6 year old boy was murdered in Sandy Hook/Newtown. I pray we finally do something about guns and the gun loving NRA is stopped in its tracks.

  25. I cannot comprehend how anyone is allowed to own a gun capable of such horrific carnage. My heart goes out to the family and friends of all these innocent victims. Surely the American gun laws need to be rethought.

  28. There is a hollow place in my heart where the grief seeps in. I don't know those families or anyone connected, but like all other tragedies...we all feel a kinship and deep sense of sadness. I can't pretend to understand...just that I sympathize and pray for those who perished and that those effected can somehow make sense out of it and heal their hearts.

    where the gun-crazed madman James Holmes is in court this week for his preliminary hearings. There is far too much of this going on in this country, our state and the world. If all your wonderful readers would add contacting their legislatiors and urging them to act on better gun control laws as well as praying for the families, perhaps something might get done. Thank you, Steve, for your beautiful words and images in this blog. Clearly you are a man of good heart, as well as great taste.
